Switching from RoadReady without losing the hours
What to check before you switch, how to get your hours out, and what a log app should and should not do with them.
RoadReady is a supervised driving log app that several state agencies point parents to, and many families start there. Some of them look for an alternative part way through the permit, usually after an update, a phone change, or a login problem. This page is for that moment: it explains how to move the hours over so nothing is retyped, and what to expect from the Permit Hours app instead.
Why families look for an alternative
These are the themes that come up in parents' public app store reviews of RoadReady at the time of writing. We have not independently verified each report, and the app changes over time; read the current reviews yourself before deciding.
- Hours missing after an update or a new phone. The most common complaint: a log that showed dozens of hours is empty or partial after reinstalling or updating.
- A required account. Recent versions ask parents to create an account and sign in to keep using the log, and some reviews describe being locked out of hours that were already logged.
- Advertising. Reviews mention ads inside the app, which parents find out of place in a form they are filling out for a government office.
None of this means your log is at risk today. It does mean you should export a copy of it now, whatever app you use. A PDF of the hours in your own files is the backup nobody can take away.
Get the hours out first
- Export the log from RoadReady as a PDF while you still have access. Save it somewhere outside the app: Files, Drive, email to yourself.
- Open the PDF in Permit Hours from the History screen's import action. The app reads the rows (date, times, duration, day or night) and adds them as past sessions, so the totals carry over. GoTime PDF exports import the same way.
- Check the totals against the PDF. Edit any row the import could not read; the original PDF stays as your reference.
Does the state accept a different app's log?
In most states, yes: the licensing office wants the hours, on its own form where it has one, and does not care how you kept the running count. A few states name RoadReady as one accepted option alongside their paper form, for example Massachusetts, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. Even there, the paper form (notarized in Ohio) is the other path, and a printed log from any app fills it. Check your state page for the form it expects.
What Permit Hours does differently
| Permit Hours | |
|---|---|
| Account | None needed to log. Family sync is optional and uses a share code, not an email login. |
| Ads | No ads. Free to start logging, then a one-time $7.99 unlock for unlimited hours. No subscription. |
| Your data | No ads and no selling of your data. The PDF export is yours to keep, outside the app. |
| Timing | Start and end a drive, and the app times it. Day and night are split at your local sunset. Past drives can be added by hand. |
| Export | A DMV-ready PDF log of every session, printable. |
| Import | RoadReady and GoTime PDF exports, so the hours you already logged come with you. |
Before you delete the old app
Keep the exported PDF and keep the old app installed until the new log matches it. If your state told you to use a particular app, read its form instructions; a printed log that shows the same columns is usually what the office needs, but the state page here links the source so you can read it yourself.
